BIGGIE: Sam De Lara, Alumni ('19), Media Arts/Animation Concentration
smalls #1: Alyssa Antolin, 4th Year, Media Arts/Animation Concentration smalls #2: Amanda Escaba, 5th Year, CS/Design Family: Candy Fam -- Describe your relationship with your BIGGIE/smalls! S: It's great! I love both my smallses very much. We all have tons in common and have a very similar stupid sense of humor. I dispell life advice/unwarranted chismis from time to time, but normally we bond over getting food/drinks a lot of the time. AA: Not only is Sam my biggie in BKD, she was a mentor figure in animation for me as well! If I had questions she'd be able to help. She really helped me get to know people from both communities. AE: Sam was the first person to talk to me when I showed up to my first barkada GM by myself, and i feel like that's kind of foreshadowed how she subsequently introduced me to barkada culture as a whole. whenever I wanted to pull up to a D1 event off campus, questioned whether or not to run for e-board (again), felt like ~going out~, needed to know which professor was the best, wanted to hear the latest chismis, or just struggled with being a functioning human being, I knew (and still know) that I can always turn to her. there's also the fact that sometimes she knows me better than I know myself and we are creepily on the same wavelength/share a sense of humor (quiplash last night???) (also I'm sorry I never finished my s*nior b*nders last year so this is kind of the closest thing to it oops hehe<3) -- What’s something you’ve learned from your BIGGIE/smalls? S: Oh man, I've learned so much about Japanese and Korean culture/pop culture from my smallses (and also probably the whole fam lol). From Amanda, I've learned/continue to relearn how to make light of any given situation and how I should reaching out to people more to continue to have strong friendships with old friends. From Alyssa, I've learned/continue to relearn how to unapologetically be myself and to continue to do things that bring me joy in life. AA: I've gotten a lot of animation advice from Sam; it def helped encourage me when I was struggling! AE: aside from literally everything about barkada - history/chismis dating to before we were both in college, what eboard's like - networking QUEEN and not just in the professional sense but also just putting yourself out there with confidence and being friendly and welcoming to everyone -- What’s one of your favorite moments with your BIGGIE/smalls? S: One of my very recent favorite moments with Amanda was when we had essentially the same answer in a family game of Quiplash. (It was very inappropriate.) It definitely reminded me how VERY similar our humor can be. One of my favorite moments with Alyssa was when we were in Ryder 301 (which was a decent amount of the time lol) and we were talking about all about the in's and out's of our major and also loving our Animation Dad. One of my most recent favorite moments of all of us together was when they (and Mia) all went to visit me in Malden and grab lunch. I know I live much farther away from them than I used to, so it really meant a lot to me for them to have travelled so far to meet me for lunch. It was also very nice to just shoot the breeze with them over food (though we do that a lot now). AA: One of my favorite moments was just hanging out with Sam at my dorm during my freshman year! She knew my RA, so she sent surprise pictures to my RA. My RA was confused to how Sam was in the dorm, since she didn't know Sam was my biggie haha AE: i'm the worst at choosing favorite moments there are definitely so many i'm forgetting!!! but uhhh i'm gonna go with FIND conference my freshman year?? six hours on a drive to philly and a weekend in a hotel is always a great bonding experience, which leaves an impression on a freshman. or maybe our attempts at cooking for barkada potlucks before we had more family members who were more competent in the kitchen
