catching up with filipino culture (Jasmin & Maya)"Maya is a very active Filipino student leader within the PAAC community, and I wanted to learn more about how they've taken baby steps to bridge parts of disconnect that they've had with Filipino culture growing up and how this intentionality has also changed their view on spending time with family."

This week, my Lola and I discussed her experiences moving to the US in 1969 and working in the US from the 1970s-1990s. We discussed assimilating to US culture, raising children in a new country, discrimination in the workplace, and other common immigrant experiences."

Four months later, the Covid-19 outbreak shut down all tourism operations in the Philippines, including the food park. This podcast is really special to me since my dad got stuck in Palawan during the lockdown where nobody could enter or exit the island, so the last time I saw him was November 2019 when I visited the food park during its soft opening."

I chose to speak to her about the mixed Filipino experience because I think that being mixed is something that is becoming ever more increasingly common but is also an experience that can be super unique to an individual. Our podcast functioned more like a conversation between me and my sister and I hoped to communicate some of our frustrations with being mixed but also some of the positive experiences we've gained through it. I also think we slightly touch base on struggling a little bit with identity and how being mixed put us in a spot where we felt more "in-touch" with a certain ethnic and cultural identity at certain parts of our lives."

smalls 1: Cath/Myca Pingol Fam: Rogue Name: Aly Uy Major (+Minor): Biochemistry Fam: ROGUE Describe your relationship with your BIGGIE/smalls: Myca and I are besties! I do give her advice for some things, but rather than a mentor/mentee relationship, I feel like we are both trying to help each other to have the best time possible in college and to navigate life stuff. I don’t know about her, but I definitely I thrive off of her amazing energy (“pink aura” lol) too! What's something you've learned from your BIGGIE/smalls?: It’s never too early to try something out! She’s president of her school’s filipino club, and she’s only a soph?! She’s too cool. But yeah she’s shown everyone that even if there is a lack of precedent for what you’re doing, don’t let it stop you from achieving your goals because you are more than capable. What's your favorite memory with your BIGGIE/smalls?: When we spilled many chismes at Gaga seafood in Chinatown ;) Name: Cath/Myca Pingol Major (+Minor): Marketing and Global Business double major Fam: ROGUE!!! Describe your relationship with your BIGGIE/smalls: Before my reveal, I asked people who my big was, but all the people told me that I had a "match made in heaven". Even though she was a stranger when we met, I knew that the vibes were there. Since we are both women in leadership positions, we understand each other's responsibilities and I know that she is someone I can always go to for advice. Aly is mom for real; she's always willing to take care of me and we joke that when she gets old, it will be my turn to take care of her. I am basically the extroverted version of Aly but she holds many traits that I hope to have as a leader: she's compassionate, graceful, and we can always be seen cackling together in the corner of the room. What's something you've learned from your BIGGIE/smalls?: Aly has been a huge inspiration for me as I am developing my own club and cultivating my leadership skills. By being so welcoming and inviting to me at Barkada and Rogue events, she has shown me how to give that same warmth and kindness to members of SU Pinoy. And she showed me the right way to drink boba: only 50% sugar! What's your favorite memory with your BIGGIE/smalls?: My favorite memory with Aly is when she came to the first ever SU Pinoy general meeting because she trekked all the way to Suffolk witness the creation of my club. She gave me support when I first began to cultivate SU Pinoy, so to see her still supporting me when my hard work has come to fruition really means a lot to me. After my presentation, she assisted me in facilitating the rest of the meeting and helped everything run smoothly by introducing icebreakers and creating a warm atmosphere, which was essential to create that sense of community. It makes me so happy to be able to show off Aly as my beautiful bigs.
