BIGGIE: Dotty Yu, 5th Year, Computer Science
smalls #1: Isabelle Carillo, 4th Year, Linguistics and Psychology smalls #2: Nesanne Tam, 3rd Year, Computer Science + Linguistics Family: Official Bread Fam -- Describe your relationship with your BIGGIE/smalls! D: I consider them to be some of my closest college friends and I'm so lucky to have them as my smalls. I genuinely feel like I learn so much about the world and myself from them. But also I get to be complete freaks with them and they don't get to judge me for it because they, too, are freaks. And is that not the ideal BIGGIE/smalls relationship??? I: Crazy... big energy! N: i feel like i can talk to Dotty about literally anything and we can both be busy and not see each other for a while but when we do it's always me and her and isba just Yelling at each other and being like "yeah it's because we're Gay!!!" she has always been around whenever i needed to Tweak and unpack whatever drama i currently have going on in my life whether it be relationships or academic things (woohoo cs majors!!!!) or family stuff or mental health things i know i can talk to her ! we r v similar in how we approach our problems in life and i think just talking things out w her always helps me a bit -- What’s something you’ve learned from your BIGGIE/smalls? D: I think they've both taught me to be more confident in myself. Both Isabelle and Nes are people I respect a lot, and so whenever we talk about topics that are a little bit more serious, I take their opinions seriously. For Isabelle, there was this one conversation we had that made me look at my own self-worth a lot more differently (for the better!) and it has impacted the way I think about myself and the things I do in my day-to-day life. For Nes, we're both computer science majors so seeing her do things like being in hackathons and actively choosing to do CS things in non-academic settings made me feel less intimidated and afraid of doing things like that (which is a pretty big thing for me). I: She's taught me how to be kinder to myself. N: she's taught me so much abt growth !!! tbh talking to Dotty about her experiences w mental health and therapy have rly rly helped me navigate the whole process of seeking help for myself and becoming better equipped and more comfortable to talk about my own personal experiences with mental health!!! -- What’s one of your favorite moments with your BIGGIE/smalls? D: I would have to say it would be when Isabelle, Nes, and I were at the Pru practicing how to order cannolis at the empty cannoli stand. Nes had been asking us to get cannolis with her the entire day. We saw the cannoli stand but there was no one manning it, so we didn't know if it was open. So we just decided to stand by it until someone came, but it took a long time so I guess Isabelle decided to just start practicing for what she was gonna say when the cannoli person came - just fully having a conversation with an imaginary person on the other side of the cannoli stand. Then Nes and Isabelle just fully for 5 straight minutes were just talking to this imaginary person - "Hi, can we order different flavors if we get the cannoli trio? ... Oh they're mini? Guys do we still want the trio if they're all small?... Oh are you out of pistachio? Hm I think I'll just have the chocolate then, guys what do you want?" This... doesn't seem as funny now that I'm typing this all out but it's too late now and I can assure you that we were all three losing our minds rehearsing for this cannoli person. Then the person came eventually and he told us something we did NOT prepare for in the 5 minutes we were rehearsing (he warned us that the classic trio came with three cannolis!!!), and we lost our minds even more because how did we NOT account for that in our simulations!!! Anyway this was just a moment that was completely ridiculous and I feel is pretty representative of many of our interactions and I appreciate just being . stupid with them . I: My favorite moment is being so nervous to reach out to my BIGGIE as a freshman that I nervous asked her if she wanted to go to a dog petting event for finals because I didn't know her that well and everyone loves dogs. It was fun bonding and everything went well except for the fact that uh... I'm allergic to dogs. N: one time me and her and isba went to the pru and got pizza and cannolis from eataly and we practiced ordering for like ten minutes bc the cannoli person wasn't there and then it became like a thing we do before we order like every time we have to Practice |
